Counselling Service for Employee Assistance and Promotion of Good Mental Health in the workplace

Businesses have a ‘duty of care’ under UK law, whether you are a large employer or only have a few staff, to protect the health, safety and welfare of all your employees (Health and Safety at Work Act 1984). You have a duty to assess the risks arising from hazards at work, including work-related mental health problems.

To create a mentally healthy workplace you need to develop a comprehensive strategy that:

• promotes well being for all staff - providing a counselling referral service can help

• tackles work-related mental health problems -providing a counselling referral service can help

• supports staff who are experiencing mental distress - providing a counselling referral service can help

By doing this, you will create a place your employees want to work in and where they can perform well.

A 2003 study by the Health and Safety Executive found that a million people are so stressed by their jobs they believe it is making them ill and up to five million people feel very or extremely stressed by their work. And yet employer awareness of mental health issues at work in the UK is poor. Most senior managers vastly underestimate the scale of the problem and most think it will never affect their workplaces (Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health, 2007; Shaw Trust, 2010).

"I worked for over a decade as manager in a mail order business and saw first-hand how work stress and personal trauma impacted on the efficiency of the staff. I spent a considerable amount of time talking to my staff and guiding them through their difficulties, the time was worth it and paid for itself over and over again, but I found myself so preoccupied with staffing matters that my day to day activities often backed up causing stress and overwork for me, with additional catch up work that saw me working long into the evenings and at weekends. This in part was one of the reasons I decided to change my career and focus on counselling.

With this in mind, I have developed a service for employers and their employees that will be of considerable support to companies and their staff."

Counselling can support your employees, helping them deal with stress and any disturbance or distress either in the workplace or in their home; some examples of the areas I work with are listed below:

  • Depression, Anxiety and Stress
  • Loss of Confidence or Low Self Esteem
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Traumatic experiences
  • Emotional, Physical or Sexual Abuse
  • Work difficulties
  • Relationships problems
  • Separation and / or divorce recovery
  • Self Defeating behaviours and patterns
  • Anger management
  • Life crisis or transition

As an employer offering this support service it may help your staff function more efficiently and be more positive in the work place producing the best results for yourself and your employees in often troubled situations. Work stress and issues are obviously directly related to the work environment, but it is important to be aware that personal difficulties may also have an influence on your work force because it is not always simple to ‘leave your problems at home’ however much employees would like to and these distractions and resulting distress can lead to poorer working ability and difficulties between members of staff.

I offer a referral service which can be accessed in a couple of ways with as much or as little financial involvement from yourself as you wish to commit to:

  • Employer referral.
  • HR department or Occupational Health referral.
  • Self-referral from employees.
